Overview

The United Nations is recruiting an Associate Communications Officer within its Resident Coordinator System, at the National Professional Officer NO-B level in the Public Information job family. The post sits in the Resident Coordination Office and supports communications that raise awareness, build engagement and strengthen the impact of UN priorities. The appointment is fixed-term for one year, with no expectation of renewal, and any extension depends on funding, budget approval and mandate renewal.

Who can apply

This is a national post, open only to nationals of Papua New Guinea. Candidates need an advanced university degree in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications or a related field. A first-level degree plus two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead. Training in data analytics, business analytics or data science is an advantage.

Applicants must have at least two years of progressively responsible experience developing and implementing communications strategies, along with knowledge of strategic communications. Desirable experience includes drafting messages for varied audiences, creating content, working with digital platforms, research and data collection, and at least one year in data analytics. English is required at UN Level II standard in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The officer works with UN agencies, government officials, civil society, local communities, media, influencers, think tanks and academic institutions. Duties include media monitoring and narrative analysis, supporting communications strategies, media mapping, preparing media lines for crises, coordinating press events and acting as spokesperson when needed. The role also covers press releases, web stories, reports and infographics, campaigns, radio, news and podcast contributions, and communications policy and training support. Data work includes tracking communications performance and preparing charts and reports. Key competencies are critical thinking, public speaking, digital design, planning and the ability to adapt tone and format to different audiences.
