TWAS Visiting Expert Programme 2026: International Research Collaboration, Expert Visits and Opportunities for Scientific Institutions in Developing Countries
Overview
The TWAS Visiting Expert Programme provides scientific institutions and research groups located in developing countries with the chance to enhance their research capabilities. By hosting internationally recognized scientists, organizations can build lasting international research partnerships, improve scientific training, and advance research activities. The initiative is organized by The World Academy of Sciences and is particularly relevant for institutions in Least Developed Countries and other developing nations seeking to upgrade their teaching and research functions through external collaboration.
Who can apply
Eligible host institutions are scientific organizations and research groups located in developing countries, with a particular focus on institutions in Least Developed Countries. These entities can invite internationally recognized experts in the natural sciences, excluding mathematics and physics, to visit their facilities.
What you get
The programme enables institutions to host an international expert for a visit lasting between two to four weeks. During this time, the visitor can conduct research, deliver lectures and seminars, collaborate with researchers, supervise students, support training activities, and discuss future partnerships. TWAS covers the most direct economy-class round-trip travel for the visiting expert.
Requirements
Host institutions are responsible for covering all local expenses associated with the visit. Additionally, both the host institution and the visiting expert must submit a report detailing the outcomes and impact of the visit. Interested institutions must prepare the necessary supporting documents, develop a clear research and training programme, and identify a suitable expert prior to applying.
Key dates
The application deadline for the current call is 23 November 2026.
