Overview

The SpaceX Intern Program gives university and graduate students hands-on experience on real projects in the aerospace and space technology industry. It runs year-round and offers roles in engineering, software and business operations. SpaceX says interns are not just observers: they can be given substantial responsibility and work alongside full-time employees on projects that support its goal of making humanity multiplanetary.

Types of roles

Engineering interns may work on design, development, testing, manufacturing, analysis and hardware development, depending on the team. Software interns contribute to software development and other technical challenges. Business operations interns support the company's broader business objectives, so students from non-engineering fields can also take part.

Graduate engineer positions are separate and meant for engineering graduates. Candidates must have completed a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or mathematics and be enrolled in a graduate program by the start of employment. They work on actual space hardware projects, independently and in teams.

Who can apply

Internships are open to technical and non-technical candidates currently enrolled at a four-year accredited university. For business operations and software roles, candidates may instead be enrolled in a graduate program by the start of employment. Master's and PhD students may be eligible, and the intern population is mainly upperclassmen and graduate students. SpaceX does not recruit only from a fixed set of universities and stresses what candidates have actually accomplished. Requirements can vary by posting.

Requirements

SpaceX looks for strong academic results and substantial hands-on project experience, such as university engineering teams, coding or design and manufacturing projects, research, entrepreneurial projects, earlier internships or relevant jobs. Non-technical candidates should show comparable practical experience in their field.

Key dates

Interns and graduate engineers must be available full time for at least 12 weeks. Terms run in spring from January to April, summer from May to August and fall from September to December. Locations in the United States include Bastrop, McGregor and Starbase in Texas, Cape Canaveral in Florida, Hawthorne, Irvine, Long Beach, Sunnyvale and Vandenberg in California, Redmond and Woodinville in Washington, Washington, DC, and Bloomfield in Connecticut. Availability varies by season, so each listing shows its own location and term.
