Senior Research Fellow in AI applied to Genomic Medicine
Overview
The Faculty of Medicine Genomic Informatics Group offers a full-time, fixed-term position as a Senior Research Fellow in AI Applied to Genomic Medicine at the University of Southampton. The appointee will work within a multidisciplinary team based at Southampton General Hospital, leading translational research aimed at improving genomic diagnostics for common autoimmune disease through advanced clinical and genomic data integration. This role is fixed-term until August 31, 2029.
Who can apply
Candidates must hold a PhD in bioinformatics, health informatics, genomics, computational biology, data science, or a closely related field. Applicants are required to have extensive experience integrating genomic data with structured clinical or phenotypic data, alongside familiarity with clinical ontologies such as ICD-10, SNOMED CT, and HPO. The role requires extensive hands-on experience using open-source large language models, high-throughput sequencing data analysis, EHR data extraction, and bioinformatics workflows. Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, Perl, C/C++, and Bash are necessary, alongside confidence working in Linux and other operating systems. Additionally, candidates need experience with data governance for sensitive data and ontology management software.
What you get
The position comes with a salary ranging from £46,970 to £49,798 per annum. The appointee joins a world-class research environment with access to professional development, mentorship, high-performance computing, and secure data environments across academic and National Health Service settings. Benefits include generous holiday allowances, pension scheme membership, flexible and part-time working options, and access to subsidised campus facilities.
Requirements
The successful candidate will lead projects extracting structured clinical findings from electronic health records using open-source large language models, harmonize these findings to relevant ontologies, and drive translational research integrating clinical and genomic data for personalized diagnostics. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining robust language model pipelines using high-performance computing platforms, producing high-quality research outputs, and managing early career researchers. The role also involves contributing to education and training in genomic data science and collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues across multiple domains. A standard Disclosure and Barring Service check is required for this role.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is November 18, 2026. The interview date is to be confirmed.
