Overview

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position in isotope geochemistry and biomineralisation within the Geochemistry Research Group at the University of Southampton. The appointee will be based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton in the School of Ocean and Earth Science. This role is a fixed-term appointment for two years and is funded through an ERC-selected Starting Grant awarded to Dr David Evans, with additional links to funding from the Royal Society. The project sits at the intersection of biomineralisation, palaeoclimate, and geochemistry, aiming to address knowledge gaps surrounding amorphous or metastable precursor phases in biomineral formation through experimental work and characterisation under various conditions.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in geochemistry. Candidates are required to have experience working with single or multi-collector plasma mass spectrometer instruments, which ideally includes related clean laboratory sample preparation. Experience using geochemical tools to constrain past climatic, oceanographic, or environmental change is also necessary. Furthermore, candidates should possess experience in geochemical box modelling or show a strong enthusiasm for developing these capabilities. Essential skills include experiment design, hypothesis-testing, dataset analysis, and the preparation of scientific reports and manuscripts. Candidates must demonstrate high levels of ambition, drive, and motivation, the ability to meet deadlines and complete challenging tasks both independently and collaboratively, and a keen interest in applying advanced geochemical techniques to study marine biomineralisation.

How to apply

Interested candidates must submit their application by uploading a cover letter and a curriculum vitae that clearly outline how their experience and skills align with the requirements of the position. For any further inquiries regarding the opening, candidates can contact Dr David Evans directly via email.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-11.
