Research Fellow
Overview
The Operations and Technology group at the UCL School of Management is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to one of two research agendas. The post is full time and fixed term for 12 months, hybrid, based at the school's Canary Wharf campus, with a flexible start and appointments possible from January 2027. The school is known for research in innovation management, technology-intensive organisations, business analytics and entrepreneurship, and ranked second in the UK for Business and Management in the Research Excellence Framework 2021.
What you will do
The first agenda is research on end-to-end synthetic data generation and decision-making under uncertainty. It develops methods for privacy-preserving data that remain useful for the operational decisions made from them, rather than treating data generation and decision-making as separate stages, with particular attention to high-stakes healthcare settings where sensitive data must support planning, capacity and resource allocation despite privacy limits.
The second agenda examines how firms, platforms and market designers can use information and assortment strategically. One possible project studies information disclosure combined with mechanism design in markets with private information. The other studies dynamic information and assortment policies in markets where customers arrive over time and do not observe earlier decisions. Both aim to show how limited, carefully designed communication and menus can improve allocation, coordination and revenue.
Requirements
Applicants must hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in operations research, operations management, economics, computer science or a related discipline. If the PhD has not been awarded before the start date, the appointment is at Research Assistant Grade 6B. They must show clear interest in one of the two agendas, naming it in the cover letter together with how they would use the 12 months, and demonstrate advanced knowledge of optimisation methods or game theory, mechanism design and economic theory, with strong mathematical skills including experience with formal proofs, evidenced through the CV and writing samples.
What you get
The salary is 43,981 to 54,019 GBP per year.
Key dates
The closing date is 26 October 2026.
