Overview

The University of Cambridge is offering a fixed-term, full-time opportunity for a Research Associate to join Professor James Locke's group at the Sainsbury Laboratory. The position focuses on developing and applying machine-learning approaches, including DNA foundation models, to examine how regulatory DNA sequences impact gene expression dynamics, variability across individual cells and plants, and environmental responses. The funds for this role are available for 16 months initially.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, quantitative plant science, computer science, statistics, or a related field. Candidates are required to have strong programming skills in Python and/or R, experience in developing or applying machine-learning methods to biological sequence, gene expression, or related datasets, and a solid understanding of statistical analysis and model evaluation.

What you get

The salary for this position ranges from 38,448 to 46,970 GBP per annum. The role offers an interdisciplinary research environment at the Sainsbury Laboratory, along with mentoring and professional development opportunities. The post holder receives support for presenting and publishing research, as well as preparing applications for independent fellowships where appropriate. Flexible working arrangements may also be considered.

Requirements

The successful candidate will develop, adapt, and evaluate computational models connecting promoters and other regulatory sequences to gene expression behavior. Responsibilities include building models using quantitative gene expression measurements, collaborating closely with experimental researchers to connect model predictions with data, and helping shape the scientific and computational direction of the project. Candidates must be self-motivated, capable of independent work, and enthusiastic about close teamwork with experimentalists. Eligible applicants must also be able to meet UK living and working eligibility requirements.

How to apply

Applicants need to submit a full curriculum vitae, a cover letter detailing their suitability for the position, and the contact details for three referees through the University of Cambridge recruitment system. Applications must include reference PT51544. Scientific enquiries should be sent directly to Professor James Locke, while questions regarding the application process should be directed to the human resources email provided by the laboratory.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-12.
