Overview

The University of Nottingham is hiring a Research Associate or Fellow for a fixed-term position within the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team working on a new project titled A Platform to Rate Organisms Bred for Improved Traits and Yield, also known as PROBITY. Working with Dr Stacia Stetkiewicz and project partners at the British On Farm Innovation Network, the appointee will use social science methods to examine barriers regarding the uptake of precision bred crops in the UK. This post is available on a fixed-term basis for 6 months as a full-time role consisting of 36.25 hours per week, with job share arrangements also open for consideration.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to hold or be close to completing a PhD in a relevant subject area such as Social Science, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, or an interdisciplinary PhD featuring a substantial social science component, or alternatively possess equivalent professional experience. Essential qualifications include experience using qualitative research collection and analysis techniques, which must encompass at least one of conducting data collection interviews, workshops, or textual analysis. Applicants need knowledge or experience of applying GDPR and Responsible Research and Innovation guidelines to data collection, analysis, and dissemination. While social science expertise is the primary focus, having familiarity with precision breeding, agriculture, food systems, or biotechnology is considered advantageous, and background in quantitative social science methods like survey analysis is desirable.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £32,080 to £47,389 per annum depending on skills and experience, with a minimum salary of £35,608 available for candidates with a relevant PhD. The role is based at the Sutton Bonington Campus of the University of Nottingham in the School of Biosciences, though it involves collaboration with colleagues at partner institutions across the UK. Hybrid and remote work arrangements may be considered for candidates based in the United Kingdom.

How to apply

Informal inquiries can be sent via email to Stacia Stetkiewicz, though applications sent directly to that email address will not be accepted. Applicants are advised to review the published candidate guidance to support the application and interview process.
