Overview
GLAD Law, formerly GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, is seeking an Assistant Director of Strategic Communications and Content. The organization works to advance LGBTQ+ rights and protect the civil rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV, and has nearly five decades of experience using strategic litigation, legislation and public education. The recruitment is handled through Positively Partners. The position is full-time and remote, with work allowed from anywhere in the United States.
The role
The Assistant Director is a senior member of the communications team, building communications strategies that support the organization's legal and policy goals. The work centers on writing and content, including speeches, event remarks, press releases, media statements, advocacy emails, newsletters, fact sheets, FAQs, blog posts, website content and digital media, often translating court decisions, legislation and regulatory changes into accessible material. The person also contributes to messaging frameworks and narrative strategies, works across litigation, policy and fundraising teams, and handles media relations by building relationships with journalists, editors and creators, pitching stories, arranging interviews, preparing spokespeople and monitoring coverage.
Requirements
GLAD Law wants a strong commitment to civil rights and comfort in a diverse, multicultural setting. It weighs professional, educational, personal and volunteer experience. The organization is particularly interested in candidates with six or more years in communications, journalism, public affairs, message development or a related field, with strong writing, editing, proofreading and narrative skills and an understanding of the changing media landscape. Legal, advocacy, policy or nonprofit communications experience is strongly preferred. Initiative, creativity and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment are expected.
What you get
