Overview

The University of Hong Kong is seeking a distinguished scholar to serve as Professor and Head of the Department of Politics and Public Administration within the Faculty of Social Sciences. The department has been active since 1970 and offers undergraduate programmes, a competitive PhD research degree programme, and three taught postgraduate programmes covering Public Administration, International and Public Affairs, and Doctor of Public Administration. The appointee will provide both strategic and operational leadership, champion department activities, align them with the faculty's strategic research areas, and contribute to the leadership structure of the Faculty.

Who can apply

Candidates must be distinguished scholars with the stature of a Full Professor at a research-intensive institution. Applicants are required to hold a PhD in Political Science or a related discipline. The area of research expertise is open, but individuals must possess a strong record of academic leadership, administrative experience, strong interpersonal skills, and a solid commitment to research, teaching, and community engagement.

What you get

The appointment as Professor will be made on tenure terms, while the role of Head of Department will be for an initial three-year term that is renewable subject to mutual agreement. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience is offered alongside annual leave and medical benefits. The university contributes up to 15 percent of the basic salary into a retirement benefits scheme, and housing benefits are provided as applicable.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online through the university's career site. Applicants need to upload an up-to-date curriculum vitae that includes contact information for three referees, a cover letter, a research plan, a statement on teaching philosophy, and an outline of the vision and mission for the role of Head of Department.

Key dates

Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and will continue until November 15, 2026, or until the post is filled, whichever occurs earlier.
