Overview

This postdoctoral position is based at the William Harvey Research Institute, part of Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom. The research focuses on investigating how the Type VI Secretion System allows the enteric pathogen Campylobacter jejuni to colonize, compete, and interact with the host. The project examines how virulence effectors impact bacterial fitness, microbial competition, and innate immune responses in the intestine using advanced human and avian intestinal models such as organ-on-chip technologies and 2D or 3D culture systems.

Requirements

Applicants must hold or be near completion of a PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Infection Biology, or a related field. Candidates need strong research experience in host-pathogen interactions, bacterial pathogenesis, infection biology, or molecular microbiology, alongside practical skills in molecular techniques and bacterial infection models. Familiarity with virulence mechanisms, innate immunity, bacterial secretion systems, or microbial competition is expected. Experience working with organoids, intestinal epithelial models, 3D cultures, or organ-on-chip systems is considered an advantage. The role also requires the capacity to manage independent research, interpret complex data, communicate findings effectively, and participate in a collaborative setting.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £39,187 to £47,550 per annum. Additional benefits include entry into a generous pension scheme, 30 days of annual leave on a pro-rata basis for fixed-term or part-time schedules, a season ticket loan program, and access to professional and personal development resources. The institution also supports flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and various campus facilities.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-19.
