Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Imaging: From Radio Astronomy to Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Medicine
Overview
Heriot-Watt University is recruiting a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers within the Biomedical and Astronomical Signal Processing Laboratory in Edinburgh. The roles involve developing next-generation computational imaging algorithms, moving from fundamental theory to applications in radio astronomy and magnetic resonance imaging. The positions are tied to research projects awarded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council through the AI-CLEAN project and the Oxford Breakthrough Listen Hub through the XIRI project.
The research focuses on creating algorithms that combine precision, robustness, computational efficiency, and scalability by utilizing deep learning and Agentic AI. The primary application centers on extreme-scale radio-interferometric imaging for facilities such as the Square Kilometre Array, followed by methodology transfer to fast, dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.
Requirements
Applicants must hold or be near completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline. Essential qualifications include expertise in computational imaging, radio interferometry, or magnetic resonance imaging, alongside the ability to conduct self-directed research and develop innovative solutions. Candidates are also required to possess a strong publication record commensurate with their career stage, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desirable criteria include experience working in multicultural and multidisciplinary research environments, the ability to collaborate effectively within a team, and a demonstrated capacity for independent research and initiative. Experience in supervising or mentoring PhD students is also considered advantageous.
What you get
The position is offered as a full-time, fixed-term contract for 18 months, requiring 35 hours per week. The salary ranges from £38,448 to £48,337 per annum at Grade 7. The intended start date is March 05, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is March 05, 2027.
