Postdoctoral Research Associate (Honorary Resident Doctor) (Fixed Term)
Overview
The Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Honorary Resident Doctor) for a period of clinical postdoctoral research on new treatments and biomarkers for mitochondrial disorders, as part of a national rare disease centre. The post is aimed at practising clinicians with a PhD and relevant specialty training who have extensive clinical and research experience with neuromuscular or neurogenetic conditions. It is full time, fixed term and on site, with funding available for two years in the first instance.
The Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group studies the genetic basis, clinical presentation and molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases and other rare inherited neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders. The group won a 7.5 million GBP LifeArc Translational Rare Disease Centres Award with partners at UCL, Newcastle University, The Lily Foundation and MDUK, creating a national platform to bring new treatments and biomarkers into clinical trials.
What you will do
The postholder supports and drives several academic-led and commercial studies and clinical trials in mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases, with supervision and training where needed but a high level of independence. The role also builds clinical, laboratory and computational skills for the postholder's own emerging research programme and allows participation in the mitochondrial and neurogenetics NHS clinic at Addenbrooke's Hospital and other NHS services.
Requirements
Applicants must have a PhD, have completed general medical training and hold MRCP or equivalent. They should preferably be registered medical practitioners permitted to practise in the UK or be willing to work towards this. Applications are encouraged from any medical specialty and career grade, with clear prior clinical and research interest in neuromuscular or neurogenetic conditions desirable. This is an integrated appointment with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, so an Honorary Clinical Contract is issued, and ending either contract ends the other.
What you get
The salary is 40,190 to 76,582 GBP per year.
How to apply
Applicants upload a covering letter, CV and completed Additional Information Form, and give referee details, one of whom must be the most recent line manager.
Key dates
The closing date is 1 November 2026.
