Overview

The Cardiovascular Research Institute at City St George's, University of London, a leading centre for investigating the causes of sudden cardiac death in the young, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The post lasts 18 months, funded by a Springboard grant from the Academy of Medical Sciences and the British Heart Foundation, and is offered on a full-time permanent contract subject to fixed-term funding, on site. The project aims to characterise and validate novel genes for Brugada syndrome using zebrafish models, which have recently become an important experimental platform for this arrhythmia disease.

What you will do

The main responsibility is to design CRISPR-mediated knockdown of zebrafish versions of novel putative Brugada genes and carry out functional analyses of how the knockdowns affect heart function. The postholder also introduces new techniques, optimises protocols that are critical to the project, provides technical expertise and troubleshooting input, works with limited supervision and contributes to data analysis and interpretation.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD in molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline, with practical expertise in gene editing, extensive direct experience of zebrafish husbandry and of developing zebrafish disease models, and experience designing and running functional assays to evaluate the effects of gene mutations. Excellent technical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team are required.

What you get

The salary is 43,482 GBP per year, with a pension scheme and a package of staff training and development.

How to apply

The selection process involves an interview and a short seven-minute presentation highlighting relevant research experience and impact. Interview dates will be confirmed later.
