Postdoctoral Research Associate
Overview
The University of Exeter is offering a full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Associate position within the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy. This EPSRC-funded project is led by Professor Mohamed Saidi and focuses on the anabelian geometry of algebraic curves and algebraic function fields in positive characteristics. The appointment runs from 1 April 2027 until 31 December 2029 and is based on site in the United Kingdom.
Who can apply
Candidates must possess a relevant PhD, be nearing completion of one, or hold equivalent qualifications and experience in a research area related to number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry. Applicants are required to have good expertise in arithmetic fundamental groups, a recognised research contribution in a related topic, and sufficient knowledge to develop research programmes and methodologies.
What you get
The starting salary ranges from £35,302 to £40,704 per annum on grade E, depending on knowledge, skills and experience. Additional offerings include freedom and support to pursue intellectual interests, support teams for teaching goals, specialist support for external engagement, career development through the Exeter Academic initiative, and staff benefits such as enhanced maternity, adoption, shared parental, and paternity leave policies, alongside a Fertility Treatment Policy.
Requirements
The successful applicant will collaborate with Professor Mohamed Saidi to establish new results for hyperbolic algebraic curves, generalising prior work by Akio Tamagawa regarding hyperbolic affine genus zero curves over the algebraic closure of a finite field. Duties include developing research objectives, projects, and proposals, identifying funding sources to secure funds, presenting at conferences and other events, developing new techniques in arithmetic fundamental groups and anabelian geometry, working collaboratively, supervising the work of others, and acting as a team leader when required.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 2027-01-18. The post is available starting from 1 April 2027 until 31 December 2029.
