Overview

The Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Oxford is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Retinal Gene Therapy. The post is in the Kapetanovic Group, reporting to Professor Jasmina Kapetanovic, an Associate Professor at Oxford and Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital. The group works at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington, Oxford. Over the past decade its research has focused on treatments for incurable retinal diseases, including discovering and developing new genetic therapies, investigating innovative ocular surgical techniques such as robotic eye surgery, and testing new therapies in human clinical trials.

The postholder will join the translational gene therapy programme, which develops adeno-associated virus based gene therapies for inherited retinal disease. They will generate the translational data needed to support preclinical development, including in vitro and in vivo proof-of-concept efficacy data, working across retinal biology, viral vector technology and translational medicine in a milestone-driven environment that links early discovery to clinical application. The postholder belongs to a research group responsible for one area of a large project and guides less experienced members, including postdocs, research assistants, technicians and PhD and project students.

Requirements

Candidates should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD or DPhil in biomedical sciences or a related field, with outstanding academic credentials and the ability to work well under pressure and manage several tasks. Experience developing retinal gene therapies, including viral vector engineering and electrophysiological, functional and behavioural assays, is highly desirable. A background in retinal research and work with in vitro and in vivo models of genetic eye disease would be advantageous.

What you get

The full-time post is fixed term for 12 months in the first instance, with pay of £39,424 to £47,779 per annum.

How to apply

The job description gives details of the responsibilities, selection criteria and application process. Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the deadline.

Key dates

Only applications received before 12:00 midday on Monday 19 October 2026 will be considered.
