Overview

MetaFilter, founded in 1999 and one of the internet's longest-running online communities, is hiring a part-time, fully remote Community Operations Manager. The organization is a volunteer-supported nonprofit that values thoughtful discussion, curiosity and kindness. The manager acts as the operational link between the Board of Directors, volunteer moderators, committees, contractors and the wider community, improving systems and supporting volunteers so that the community stays welcoming and well run.

Key duties include running the volunteer moderation program, with coordinating moderator schedules and coverage, offering resources and guidance, holding check-ins, identifying training needs and supporting retention. The manager also helps keep the online environment respectful by upholding community values, answering questions and concerns, supporting community-wide communications, spotting emerging issues and promoting fairness and transparency in moderation. Other tasks include acting as the main contact for volunteer committees, maintaining documentation and policies, supporting data governance and privacy practices, coordinating with technical and administrative contractors and preparing operational reports for leadership.

What you get

The salary is between $55,000 and $65,000 USD per year, depending on hours and experience. Hours are 24 to 30 per week, negotiable, on a flexible schedule with occasional evening and weekend availability.

Requirements

Applicants should have experience managing online communities, coordinating remote volunteer teams and supporting volunteer-led organizations, along with skills in community engagement, conflict resolution, project management, documentation and working independently. Excellent communication, strong judgement, empathy and the ability to handle multiple priorities are expected. Helpful extras include nonprofit experience, online moderation and community governance, volunteer management systems, collaboration with developers or contractors and cloud infrastructure knowledge such as AWS.

How to apply

Candidates apply through MetaFilter's official application form.
