Overview

Meta is looking for a Software Engineer III for a one-year contract assignment in New York, United States, working on artificial intelligence, machine learning and large language model (LLM) evaluations. The work is on-site in a research laboratory environment. The position is offered through Tundra Technical Solutions, a staffing and consulting provider, and is not a full-time Meta employment role. The successful candidate joins Meta's Pretraining Research Team within the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) organisation, which evaluates language models across pretraining, midtraining and post-training.

What the role involves

The engineer runs LLM evaluations at each training stage, organises results across models, benchmarks and metrics, ports evaluations between frameworks and codebases, and checks that results are correct and reproducible. Other tasks include developing, testing and improving prompts used in benchmarks, analysing findings, and producing clear summaries and visualisations that help research teams make decisions.

Requirements

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and three to five years of experience with LLM-related topics, including pretraining and pretraining evaluation. Required skills are Python, PyTorch, experience building systems with machine learning or deep learning, and knowledge of LLM evaluation. Preferred knowledge includes perplexity, covering what it measures, how it behaves across model sizes, how it relates to downstream task performance and its limitations, and familiarity with scaling ladders, meaning training models of different sizes and understanding how evaluation metrics change with scale.

What you get

Pay ranges from $90 to $98.72 per hour in United States dollars. Tundra Technical Solutions states that benefits may include optional medical, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, up to 15 days of paid time off per year and a New Child Benefit. Questions about contract terms should go to Tundra Technical Solutions.

How to apply

Candidates should show relevant experience in LLM evaluation, pretraining, machine learning or deep learning systems, software development and research-oriented projects. Qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records are considered in line with applicable law.
