Overview

The Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027 is a postdoctoral programme at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the United States. It gives selected early-career scientists and engineers full funding to carry out a major research project of their own design, rather than working mainly on an established project. Fellows work with internationally recognised researchers, use advanced scientific capabilities and receive mentoring while building their own research programme.

What you get

Fellows receive full funding to pursue the proposed research at PNNL. The fellowship offers the chance to conduct an independent project, work alongside leading scientists, use state-of-the-art research capabilities, build professional networks and develop as independent researchers within a national laboratory.

Who can apply

The fellowship is for recent and upcoming PhD graduates in science and engineering. Applicants must have completed, or be on track to complete, a PhD in a field related to PNNL's mission areas, from an accredited college or university. For the 2027 fellowship, candidates must have finished their PhD within the last three years or before the fellowship starts. The fellowship is based in the United States and all PNNL staff must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work there, so international applicants should check work-authorisation requirements carefully before applying.

Requirements

A central part of the application is a detailed, original research proposal setting out the plans, objectives, methodology and expected outcomes. Proposals should fit one of four broad areas: scientific discovery, energy resiliency, data science and computing, or national security. A strong proposal shows a clear and important research question, sound scientific reasoning, originality, a well-defined approach, potential scientific or technological impact, alignment with PNNL's mission and an independent research vision. No application deadline is given.
