The University of Aberdeen is a public research university in Aberdeen, Scotland, and one of Scotland's four ancient universities. It was founded in the late fifteenth century as King's College by papal bull, at the petition of Bishop William Elphinstone and King James IV. A second institution, Marischal College, was founded in 1593, and the two merged in 1860 to form the modern university.
