Overview

The International Medical Corps Social Worker Volunteer Opportunity 2026 places experienced mental health and social work professionals onto a domestic emergency-response standby roster. This program supports communities impacted by disasters across the United States and its territories. Selected individuals are placed on standby and may be contacted for deployment when a crisis occurs and their qualifications match the response requirements.

Volunteers carry out their duties within settings such as emergency shelters, medical field units, and mobile medical units. Working as part of a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support team alongside mental health clinicians and coordinators, volunteers deliver trauma-informed care, help individuals access essential resources, manage referrals, and maintain accurate patient records. Roster members may need to deploy to a crisis within 48 hours, though placement on the roster does not guarantee deployment or paid work.

Requirements

Applicants typically need a Master of Social Work, and a valid professional licence is preferable. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of relevant and progressive experience in social work, mental health counselling, or clinical psychology. Strong preferences include background in disaster response, emergency departments, or humanitarian settings, as well as intermediate or advanced training in somatic-based trauma therapy. Valuable attributes include experience working with diverse populations, low-resource settings, volatile environments, or conducting rapid mental health and psychosocial support community assessments.

Essential skills include strong organization, communication, sound judgment, self-motivation, decision-making under pressure, and resilience. Volunteers must be flexible and able to collaborate with people from varied cultural backgrounds. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, and Spanish language skills are desirable. Deployed personnel may need to travel at short notice, live or work temporarily in austere conditions, carry moderately heavy equipment, wear a backpack for extended periods, and walk or hike in remote locations.
