Harvard Nieman Fellowship 2027-28: Application Guide, Eligibility, Requirements and How to Apply
Overview
The Harvard Nieman Fellowship offers experienced journalists a transformative year of professional and intellectual development at Harvard University. Offered through the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard, the programme is designed for established media professionals seeking to step away from their normal work environment for a period of intensive study, reflection, and leadership development. Rather than functioning as a conventional academic degree programme or a writing residency, the fellowship allows participants to design a customized year of study around their professional interests and goals.
Who can apply
The fellowship is open to working journalists who have accumulated at least five years of full-time media experience. Candidates are separated into two distinct categories based on citizenship. The International Nieman Fellowship is intended for non-U.S. citizens, including those working in the United States. The U.S. Nieman Fellowship is for U.S. citizens, including those working outside the United States. Individuals holding dual citizenship with the United States and another country should contact the Nieman Foundation to determine the correct application category.
Requirements
Applicants must submit an online application consisting of several components. The required materials include a personal statement of up to 1,000 words detailing the candidate's journalistic experience, career plans, motivations, and values. Candidates must also submit a study proposal of up to 500 words outlining the central question, interest, or area of inquiry they intend to explore, along with relevant Harvard resources that will support their goals. Book proposals are not eligible. Additionally, the application requires a professional profile, work samples, and three letters of recommendation.
Key dates
The application deadline depends on the applicant's citizenship category. The deadline for the International Nieman Fellowship is December 1, and the deadline for the U.S. Nieman Fellowship is January 31.
