Governance Manager, Frontier AI Safety and Policy at Google DeepMind: Apply for a Senior AI Governance and Policy Career Opportunity
Overview
Google DeepMind is hiring a Governance Manager for Frontier AI Safety and Policy, a senior position working at the meeting point of artificial intelligence, public policy, security, regulation and risk management. The person in the role helps shape governance frameworks, safety standards, government evaluation protocols and external oversight arrangements for highly capable AI systems. It can be based in London, United Kingdom, or Washington, D.C., United States.
What the role involves
The manager engages with international standards bodies such as ISO and INCITS and with industry coalitions including the Frontier Model Forum, contributing to technical benchmarks and best practices for advanced AI. They set up and oversee steady-state protocols for unclassified and classified government model evaluations, and negotiate frameworks for cross-border incident disclosure.
A central task is acting as a bridge between external regulatory developments and internal safety and security teams, turning evolving rules and standards into practical internal processes, including inputs to launch decisions. The role also helps define policies for external oversight, such as auditor criteria, access protocols, external evaluation requirements and positions on regulatory regimes.
Requirements
Applicants need a Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience, plus seven years of experience in public policy, national security or the AI industry. At least three of those years must be focused specifically on frontier AI safety and governance, so the post is aimed at established professionals rather than recent graduates. English proficiency is required unless the posting says otherwise.
Preferred experience includes linking AI safety best practice with internal risk management, designing or managing third-party testing, incident disclosure or auditing regimes, drafting or influencing technical and governance standards, and holding a trusted network of senior government officials, think tanks and technical policy experts in the United States, United Kingdom and European Union.
What you get
For the United States location the listed pay is USD 188,000 to 205,000 plus a 15 percent target bonus, with the exact figure depending on skills, experience, education and training. Google also offers employee benefits. No separate figure is given for London.
How to apply
Candidates apply through the Google Careers system and indicate a preferred working location. No closing date is specified, and the vacancy can close once hiring needs are met. Google does not accept CVs from recruitment agencies and states that it is an equal opportunity employer, with an accommodation process available during recruitment. Eligibility depends on work authorization for the chosen location.
