Globe and Mail Foundation Scholarship for Syrian Media Professionals: Online Journalism Fellowship at the University of Toronto
Overview
The Globe and Mail Foundation is funding a place for one Syrian media professional on the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana Fellowship in Journalism and Health Impact. The fellowship is part-time and runs from September 8, 2026, to March 16, 2027. It can be completed entirely online from anywhere, so no move to Canada is needed.
The programme helps media workers turn their expertise into a reporting beat and produce stories for international audiences. It has a health and journalism emphasis, but applicants are not limited to health topics. It is intended to support a Syrian journalist during Syria's transition and to help them connect with global newsroom editors.
What you get
The Fellow receives journalism training for international reporting, mentorship from programme faculty, help developing and pitching story ideas to editors, and training in investigative journalism and the use of AI for reporting. Guidance on building a freelance practice and on career planning is included, along with extra mentorship from The Globe and Mail Foundation depending on need.
The programme has three parts: a two-week bootcamp from September 8 to 18, 2026; weekly cohort teaching and story meetings from September 22, 2026, to March 16, 2027; and monthly skills classes from October 2026 to March 2027, held on one Friday and Saturday pair each month.
Who can apply
Applicants must be media professionals from Syria with a good working knowledge of English and an interest in international reporting. They must be able to take part from September 2026 to March 2027 and be ready to develop and pitch their own stories. No minimum degree or age is specified.
How to apply
Applications are sent by email in English to the University of Toronto fellowship director, with a copy to The Globe and Mail Foundation. The package includes a CV, a 500-word Letter of Intent describing the reporting beat, and two story pitches. Up to three reporting clips may be added if available, and these may be in Arabic. A volunteer jury assesses applications.
