Fully Funded DKFZ PhD Position 2026 in Translational Cancer Biology at LMU Munich
Overview
The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is offering a fully funded three-year PhD position in Translational Cancer Biology at the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) partner site in Munich. The post sits in the Department of Translational Oncology at LMU Klinikum Großhadern, and the successful candidate joins the DKFZ International PhD Program. The expected start is November 2026.
The project investigates the molecular mechanisms behind progression, metastasis and therapy resistance in small cell lung cancer, an aggressive cancer. It focuses on MYC-dependent transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of enhancer networks and how this shapes gene-expression programmes linked to tumour progression, cancer-cell identity and treatment response, with the aim of revealing possible therapeutic vulnerabilities. Work is mainly experimental and covers molecular, cell and biochemical experiments, CRISPR-based genome engineering, three-dimensional models such as organoids and spheroids, genetically engineered mouse models, and analysis of multi-omics data including bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, ChIP sequencing and ATAC sequencing. Results are presented at group meetings, seminars and conferences and in publications.
Who can apply
Applicants need a master's degree in molecular medicine, human biology, biochemistry, biology or a closely related life-science discipline. No nationality restriction is stated, so international applicants may apply subject to admission, visa and employment rules.
Requirements
Practical experience in molecular biology and mammalian cell culture is required. Interest in translational cancer research, gene regulation, mouse models and computational analysis of genomic data is expected, along with independence, motivation, teamwork and good English. Basic bioinformatics experience is desirable but not mandatory. All employees must provide proof of immunity against measles.
What you get
The position is funded for three years with a doctoral salary and usual social benefits. Conditions include 30 days of annual vacation, flexible working hours, possible mobile and part-time arrangements, family-friendly conditions, a subsidised Germany job ticket, mentoring, career support and health-management services.
