Overview

The Office of Communications and Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission runs an externship programme for undergraduate and graduate or professional students. The EEOC is the federal agency that prevents and remedies unlawful employment discrimination, enforcing laws against bias based on race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age for people 40 or older, disability and genetic information. The Office represents the agency to the public, the news media and Congress.

The internships are unpaid, though students may be eligible for academic credit depending on their institution's policies. They run during the academic year and the summer.

Who can apply

Applicants should be interested in civil rights and the EEOC's mission, and show strong Microsoft Office skills, excellent writing, strong communication and good organisation. Law students are strongly preferred for the Advice, Audits and External Reports area because some work involves legal and policy research and memoranda.

What you get

Interns can work in several areas. In Communications they may draft social media and website content, assist with press releases and talking points and support communications strategies and media outreach. In Legislative Affairs they may research legislative issues, track bills, prepare materials for congressional staff, draft responses to congressional inquiries and attend briefings. In Advice, Audits and External Reports they may research and answer inquiries, assist with requests from the Congressional Budget Office, Government Accountability Office and Office of Management and Budget, prepare agency reports and prepare legal or policy memoranda. In Private Sector Outreach and Training they may research community and advocacy partners, draft marketing materials for free and fee-based training, prepare presentations and assist with large web-based training. A fifth area, Federal Sector Outreach and Training, supports the EEOC's training activities.
