Overview

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is hiring an East Asia Researcher for its Asia-Pacific Programs team. The part-time contract role is about 20 hours per week and fully remote within the Asia region. CPJ, founded in 1981, is an independent nonprofit that defends journalists and promotes press freedom worldwide by documenting attacks, advocating for rights and supporting media workers facing threats, imprisonment, violence or persecution.

The researcher focuses mainly on China and Hong Kong and also monitors Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Mongolia. Duties include documenting attacks on journalists and media organizations, researching press freedom developments, reporting breaking news through alerts, statements and features, monitoring social media and sources on the ground, updating CPJ databases on imprisoned, killed and missing journalists, supporting advocacy, maintaining relationships with journalists and civil society, providing research for journalist assistance cases and flagging urgent developments.

Who can apply

CPJ seeks an experienced professional with at least five years of experience researching, reporting and writing about press freedom and freedom of expression. Applicants must be fluent in Mandarin and English, reading, writing and speaking, and should understand East Asian political, social and media environments. Knowledge of another regional language is an advantage, as are Salesforce experience and existing contacts in East Asian media or human rights communities. Google Workspace proficiency, independence, interpersonal and project management skills and the legal right to work in the applicant's location are expected.

Requirements

Applicants should be in a time zone within about two to three hours of the region's core working hours. They must join a weekly team meeting, usually 7:00 p.m. Taipei time on Tuesdays, and an all-staff meeting, usually 9:00 a.m. New York time on Wednesdays, and may need occasional after-hours support.

What you get

Pay is commensurate with experience and location, and no fixed figure is given.

How to apply

Applicants submit a letter of interest, a resume and two professional references, and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
