Overview

Aston University is recruiting a Clinical Fellow in its Psychology, Health and Clinical Science School, on a part-time (0.51) permanent basis at the main campus in Birmingham city centre. The university is developing a Dispensing Optician Apprenticeship and a BSc (Hons) Ophthalmic Dispensing programme, in which apprentices and students gain patient-facing clinical experience throughout the course.

What you will do

The role mainly involves supporting students through remote asynchronous tutoring, face-to-face teaching and assessment so that they meet all the General Optical Council outcomes for registration and develop an inquisitive, knowledgeable, evidence-based, professional mindset. The Clinical Fellow teaches on the degree apprenticeship and undergraduate programmes, maintains and develops their own and their subject's scholarly and professional capabilities, builds links with academic, industry and professional communities to promote the programme, works collegially with the teaching team and keeps colleagues and students up to date on practice and professional requirements.

Who can apply

The university seeks an experienced registrant of the General Optical Council with relevant qualifications and substantial experience in dispensing optics and professional practice. Candidates should have excellent knowledge of contemporary optical practice and be able to turn professional expertise into engaging, inclusive teaching. Experience of curriculum development, assessment, student supervision and supporting student outcomes is desirable, along with an understanding of professional body requirements and quality assurance. Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills are needed, and commitment to scholarship, continuing professional development, equality, diversity and inclusion is essential. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for new applicants to the Skilled Worker visa route.

What you get

The salary is 47,389 to 56,535 GBP per year pro rata at Grade 9. Benefits include training and development opportunities, 30 days of bookable leave plus 13 days of bank holiday and university closure days, everyday discounts, family-friendly policies, and an on-site gym and pool with discounted staff membership.

Key dates

The closing date is 23:59 GMT on Sunday 25 October 2026, and interviews are on Tuesday 17 November 2026.
