Overview
Black Lives Matter Grassroots (BLMG) is hiring a Communications Assistant for a full-time remote position open to candidates anywhere in the United States, starting on 1 September 2026. The annual salary is USD 50,000 to 60,000, with employee benefits. The assistant provides communications and media support for a nationally recognised movement working on racial justice, civic engagement and community empowerment, working with the Communications Strategist to share the organisation's mission and campaigns with internal and external audiences, and collaborating with leadership, staff, contractors, local chapters, partners and media.
Duties include tracking campaigns and stories, maintaining communications calendars, building relationships with Black and mainstream media, responding to media requests, managing websites and social media, creating digital content, drafting and proofreading press releases and media alerts, coordinating briefings, interviews and press events, giving technical support in meetings, taking notes and following up, supporting radio programmes through booking, technical help, research and content, managing communications email accounts, scheduling meetings, coordinating event logistics, travelling to support field activities and campaigns and helping with emergency communications.
Requirements
Applicants need strong organisation, written and verbal communication, problem solving and self-direction, familiarity with print, television, online, radio, podcast and digital media, technical proficiency with websites, online documents, spreadsheets, virtual meeting platforms, social media management, copy editing and basic video editing, basic graphic design in Canva or similar, flexibility to travel on short notice, an understanding of the Black radical tradition and a commitment to organisational security practices. Relationships with Black media, experience with journalists, knowledge of press release and marketing formats, strong social media marketing and an understanding of Black liberation movements and social justice organising are preferred. The organisation also looks for personal qualities including kindness, teamwork, critical thinking, courage, integrity, discretion, a service mindset and humility.
