BBC Writers Open Call 2026: Applications Open for Aspiring Television and Radio Scriptwriters
Overview
The BBC Writers Open Call 2026 invites emerging and established writers to submit original scripts to be discovered and considered for professional writing development programmes within the BBC. Organised by BBC Writers, the initiative aims to identify talented individuals with the potential to build successful careers in television, radio, and scripted entertainment. The opportunity is a talent development initiative rather than a commissioning competition, meaning selection does not guarantee production or a broadcast contract. Instead, it focuses on connecting promising writers with mentorship and long-term career opportunities within the broadcasting industry.
Who can apply
The opportunity is open to writers based in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The initiative welcomes individuals at various career stages, including newcomers, playwrights interested in television writing, and radio drama writers exploring other forms of scripted broadcasting. Applicants must carefully review the official eligibility requirements, as those who do not satisfy the conditions will not have their submissions considered.
What you get
Successful writers who demonstrate outstanding potential may be considered for further professional development opportunities. These include scripted development groups, voices development groups, and the Writers Access Group, which is offered every two years for deaf, disabled, and/or neurodegenerative writers.
Requirements
Applicants must submit an original and completed script in PDF format, a completed online application form, a logline summarising the script or television series in one or two sentences, and any additional supporting information requested by the system. For series or serial submissions, writers generally submit the first episode or pilot, though a different episode may be submitted with a brief explanatory page if it better demonstrates their abilities. The initial selection stage assesses only the first ten pages, so writers should focus on establishing engaging characters, story, and narrative direction immediately. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.
How to apply
Applicants must visit the official BBC Writers Open Call webpage, review the terms and conditions and privacy notice, and confirm their eligibility. Submissions are made electronically by creating an account or signing in to the BBC E-Submissions platform, completing the online form, and uploading the PDF script and required supporting information before the deadline.
Key dates
Applications opened on 3 November 2026. The application deadline is 1 December 2026 at 12 noon.
