Overview

The University of Leeds is hiring an Associate Professor in Exercise Physiology within the Faculty of Biological Sciences, specifically in the School of Biomedical Sciences. This permanent, full-time academic position is based on site and involves carrying out research, teaching, and management duties to contribute to academic leadership in biomedical, sport, and exercise science.

Appointees will join the Cardiovascular and Exercise Sciences research pillar, which holds an international reputation for work spanning cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal physiology using experimental human, clinical, and computational approaches. The research scope ranges from fundamental discovery science to translational applications aimed at improving health, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Who can apply

The university seeks experienced and influential academics with proven abilities to conduct teaching and research in exercise physiology and related topics. Candidates should have an excellent research record, demonstrated success in obtaining funding, and a commitment to delivering world-leading research alongside an exceptional student experience.

The search particularly welcomes applicants whose research advances the understanding of physiological responses and adaptations to exercise and other forms of physiological stress. Desirable research focus areas include applications in healthy ageing, disease prevention, and the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals living with acute and chronic health conditions, in order to complement and extend the existing research portfolio.

Requirements

The role requires establishing and leading an independent research programme while securing competitive external research funding. Successful candidates must develop interdisciplinary collaborations both within and beyond the university, contribute to innovation and excellence in teaching, supervise and develop postgraduate researchers, and provide academic leadership and mentorship to colleagues.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £61,759 to £73,708 per annum at Grade 9. Benefits include 26 days of holiday plus approximately 16 bank holidays and university closure days, amounting to 42 days per year.

Additional provisions include generous pension scheme options with life assurance, health and wellbeing benefits featuring discounted staff membership to the campus gym with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls, and personal development opportunities through professional learning courses.
