Overview

The newly established Institute for Medical AI (IMAI) at Heidelberg University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University is preparing to recruit postdoctoral researchers, engineers and researchers for on-site positions in Heidelberg, Germany. IMAI officially launches on 1 October 2026 and combines research, clinical deployment and education in medical AI, aiming to move new AI methods into clinical practice and train future specialists. It acts as a hub for AI across the Heidelberg-Mannheim hospital system and Medical Faculty and brings together experts in medicine, computer science, physics, biology, engineering and law.

Focus areas

The upcoming recruitment centres on four areas. Biomedical AI covers multimodal foundation models, AI biomarkers and AI agents using imaging, pathology, genomics and clinical records. Robotics concentrates on laboratory automation and physical action surfaces for AI agents. AI social sciences covers multi-agent systems and agent civilizations. The fourth area is deploying AI in a large hospital system through the Innovation & Implementation Center, which evaluates prototypes, supports clinical implementation and monitors systems after deployment, including documentation, training and oversight.

Research groups

Research topics include on-premise and autonomous medical AI agents, healthcare language model safety, multimodal histopathology models, AI biomarkers and distributed learning. Groups include the Kather Lab on clinical AI and computational pathology, Distributed Learning & Multimodal AI on swarm and federated learning, and Precision Oncology AI on agentic and multimodal AI for precision oncology, clinical trials and rare cancers. IMAI stresses prospective evaluation of clinical AI for usefulness, safety, reliability and workflow effects.
