Overview

Alcorn State University, a comprehensive land-grant university in Mississippi, is hiring a full-time Research Assistant for its institutional research function at its campus in Lorman, Mississippi. The post supports the collection, organization, analysis, reporting and publication of university data, and helps the department carry out its research studies.

The assistant maintains institutional databases that hold information gathered from different university units, and helps make sure that data is accurately collected, processed, reported and communicated.

Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor's degree and at least five years of related experience and/or training. Backgrounds in business, technology, information systems, quantitative analysis or the social sciences are a particularly good fit. The university wants strong analytical and problem-solving skills, accuracy with data and reporting, and the ability to handle complex assignments. Experience with, or willingness to learn, WordPress, Banner and Argos is requested, along with experience in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio.

Helpful qualities include critical thinking, customer service, staying calm under pressure, strong organization, managing several responsibilities at once and working on lengthy projects. Because of the experience requirement, the role suits seasoned professionals more than recent graduates.

Duties include maintaining institutional databases, coordinating training sessions for faculty and staff, completing reports, surveys, questionnaires and information requests from pre-collected data, updating and publishing statistics, and sharing print and electronic statistical publications through the department webpage. The assistant also keeps a calendar of reporting deadlines, follows up with university units for information, communicates with departments about data quality, supports the Director with institutional research studies and manages day-to-day office operations.

What you get

Full-time employees may receive a benefits package that includes healthcare, dental and vision coverage, retirement and deferred compensation plans, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, holidays, vacation and sick leave. The role offers exposure to university-wide datasets and the chance to work with faculty, staff, administrators and different units.

How to apply

Candidates apply through the university's recruitment process, supported by its Human Resources Management office. A resume or CV should show the educational background and experience in research and data analysis, database management, institutional reporting, quantitative analysis, information systems, data quality and Microsoft Office, along with any WordPress, Banner or Argos experience.
