Overview

The Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027 is a year-long, part-time programme for professionals who want to examine questions at the intersection of technology, democracy and society. Fellows receive a $10,000 stipend, editorial guidance, membership in an international cohort and chances to publish public-interest reporting and analysis. The programme began in 2023 and has supported 25 fellows from 11 countries across three cohorts. Fellows work remotely as independent contractors for 12 months beginning in January 2027.

Tech Policy Press is particularly interested in work that highlights communities and regions that have been left out of global technology policy discussions. According to the programme's frequently asked questions, there is no specific preferred geographic or thematic focus for applicants from the Global South.

What you get

The stipend is paid quarterly. Fellows also receive ongoing editorial guidance, take part in monthly learning and exchange sessions and can build a substantial body of work on one issue. Their work is planned to be published on the Tech Policy Press website and featured in its newsletter, and may also appear on its podcast and at special events.

Who can apply

The fellowship welcomes journalists, researchers, lawyers and public policy professionals who have established expertise in a technology policy issue, geography or related area. Applicants need a demonstrated interest or background in technology policy, media or a related field.

Requirements

Fellows contribute reporting or analysis on technology and democracy at least once a month, attend a mandatory one-hour monthly cohort meeting and a monthly editorial check-in, and collaborate with other fellows when appropriate. They must meet agreed deadlines and disclose conflicts of interest. Applicants should explain their topic, why it matters, why they are well placed to cover it and how it will inform public understanding and decision-making.

Key dates

Applications close at 11:59 p.m. EDT on September 24, 2026.
