Overview
The International Monetary Fund offers the Fund Internship Program for economics PhD students. The paid, full-time position lasts approximately 10 to 12 weeks, running from June 7, 2027, to August 27, 2027, at IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Participants work 40 hours per week alongside experienced IMF staff on real-world economic research and policy issues affecting member countries.
Who can apply
Applicants must be enrolled students within one to two years of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field, and they must return to their studies after the internship concludes. Candidates must demonstrate strong academic performance, analytical, quantitative, and computer skills, and excellent written and spoken English. Applicants must also be under 32 years old when the internship begins, with the sole exception being time spent in mandatory military service. Previous participants in the Fund Internship Program are not eligible to reapply.
What you get
Selected interns receive financial compensation for the full-time, 40-hour weekly schedule. The IMF provides documentation to support the G4 visa application for participants who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or otherwise authorized to work in the United States. Interns must arrange and secure their own housing, though onboarding resources and guidance may be provided.

Proof of status may consist of a recent university transcript or a letter from the university confirming active enrollment and recent grades.
