Working Student Hardware Engineering & Product Design (m/f/d)
Overview
Datacept offers a working student position in hardware engineering and product design based in Horneburg, with days that do not require hands-on work available at the Hamburg HafenCity headquarters. The role involves taking existing hardware for cognitive electronic warfare systems and advancing it into a series-ready next generation. The position operates on a 6-month contract with the option to extend, offering flexible hours around lectures and exams up to 20 hours per week during the semester and more during semester breaks.
Who can apply
Students enrolled in mechanical engineering, product design, mechatronics, or a similar field are eligible to apply. Candidates need strong computer-aided design skills using programs such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor, and must have practical experience building real hardware rather than only modeling it. Applicants should have operated a CNC mill or be ready to learn how to operate one on the company equipment, understand design for manufacturing, and be capable of moving independently from an idea to a prototype.
What you get
The position provides hourly compensation ranging from 16 to 20 euros. Working students gain access to an in-house workshop featuring a CNC mill and 3D printers to design and fabricate parts, along with insights into real radio frequency hardware and field deployments. The role offers the perspective of completing a thesis or transitioning into a long-term role as the company grows.
Requirements
Applicants must be available to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester. While not strictly required, helpful qualifications include basic computer-aided manufacturing knowledge, experience with 3D printing, turning, sheet metal, or composites, and electronics basics such as wiring, sensors, and integrating printed circuit boards and antennas into enclosures. Additional beneficial backgrounds include self-built projects, maker work, Formula Student involvement, university team participation, a portfolio, rendering and visual design skills, experience with rugged or outdoor hardware, and a desire to contribute to Europe's technological sovereignty.
How to apply
The hiring process begins with a 15-minute remote introductory call to discuss the applicant and their background. This is followed by a 45-minute project conversation where candidates bring what they have built, including computer-aided design files, photos, or physical parts, to work through a small design challenge. The final stage is an in-person meeting at the workshop in Horneburg with the founders, concluding with a reference check and an offer within 48 hours.
