Overview
The National Human Rights Commission of India is running its Winter Internship Programme 2026, a four-week in-person programme in New Delhi from 14 December 2026 to 8 January 2027. It is aimed mainly at law students and gives practical exposure to human rights law, research and public policy. The commission is India's statutory human rights institution, established in 1993, and offers student internships in both summer and winter.
The programme mixes classroom sessions, research work, discussions, book reviews and film discussions on social issues. Interns meet the Chairperson, Members and senior officials. Field visits may include police stations, prisons, NGOs, Parliament House, national commissions, the National Green Tribunal, the National Legal Services Authority and the Supreme Court of India.
Who can apply
Eligible applicants are students who have completed three years or Semester VI of an integrated five-year BA/BBA LLB or similar course and are moving into the fourth or fifth year. LL.M. students may also apply. All applicants need at least 60% marks in Class XII.
What you get
Interns who complete the programme receive a stipend of ₹12,000. Students coming from outside Delhi can claim travel support covering ordinary second-class train travel to New Delhi and back to their place of study by the shortest route.
Group research projects carry prizes of ₹15,000, ₹10,000 and ₹5,000 for first, second and third place. Top performers in book reviews and declamation can receive books worth up to ₹1,000. A certificate of participation is given to those who meet requirements on attendance, punctuality, discipline, participation and completed academic work.
Requirements
Applicants need attested scanned mark sheets from Class 10 onward, plus marks for completed semesters or years of their current course. A Statement of Purpose and a recommendation letter or email from the HOD, Dean or Principal in the prescribed format are also required. Incomplete applications may be rejected.

Applications go through the commission's online application process and must be in by 15 October 2026 at 6:00 PM. Late applications are not accepted.
