Overview

The World Health Organization, the United Nations specialized agency for international public health, offers internships to students and eligible recent graduates. WHO's work covers disease prevention, health systems, emergency response, health policy and research. Internships are advertised across its headquarters, regional offices and country offices, so duty stations, duration, responsibilities and eligibility rules differ between vacancies. Some positions may allow remote or hybrid work where permitted.

Depending on the department, interns may conduct research and literature reviews, collect and analyse data, support public health programmes, prepare reports and presentations, assist with communications, support policy research, monitor projects, manage information and databases, help with meetings and events, and carry out administrative and coordination tasks.

What you get

WHO calls the payment a living allowance rather than a salary. For current Geneva internships, the allowance is up to CHF 1,680 per month for interns whose permanent residence is outside Geneva, roughly US$2,100 to US$2,200 depending on the exchange rate. Interns who permanently live in Geneva may receive up to CHF 739 per month. The actual amount depends on the internship arrangements and the intern's circumstances.

Beyond the allowance, interns can gain international work experience, exposure to global health programmes, networking opportunities, research and analytical skills, experience in multicultural teams and an understanding of international health policy.

Who can apply

Requirements, including nationality and education, are set by each vacancy. Relevant fields of study include public health, medicine, nursing, epidemiology, nutrition, economics, statistics, data science, international development, communications, social sciences, political science and business administration.

How to apply

Candidates search WHO's recruitment platform for a suitable internship, check the eligibility requirements, create or update an online candidate profile, prepare a current CV, complete the application form with the requested academic and professional details, and submit before the closing date of the specific vacancy.
