Overview

The United Nations University offers a paid Junior Fellows internship at its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, for the Spring 2027 session. Fellows take part in real projects connected to global development and policy, giving students and recent graduates direct exposure to work within the United Nations system. The placement lasts about six months, running from 1st March 2027 to 27th August 2027.

Who can apply

The internship is open to nationals of any country. Candidates should be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a Master's or PhD degree, with a strong interest in international relations, development studies or public policy. Fluent English, solid communication skills and good research skills are expected. Applicants must have no more than five years of work experience in their related field.

What you get

Selected fellows receive a monthly stipend to help with living costs, along with transport to and from the Shibuya headquarters and a place in the office. They also get free on-site and online access to the headquarters library and gym, and 1.5 days of leave for each month served.

Duties may include research and policy analysis, help with project coordination, support for communications and outreach, and collaboration with international teams. The experience builds research and policy skills and an international profile, and can support later UN careers.

Requirements

The application consists of an application form, a CV, a cover letter, a funding form, and letters of recommendation with the recommendation form. The funding form sets out the source, amount and duration of the applicant's actual or projected funding while living in Tokyo. A current CV should be uploaded in place of the P11 form requested in the online system.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online through the UNU careers portal, with all required documents attached.
