NASA Internships 2027: Paid Opportunities for Students in STEM and Other Fields
Overview
NASA offers two internship routes for students: Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) internships and Pathways internships. Both involve working with NASA professionals on projects connected to science, technology, aeronautics and space exploration, and they cover non-STEM fields such as communications, human resources, administration, accounting and procurement. OSTEM gives more than 2,000 students a year short, hands-on placements under NASA mentors. Pathways positions are structured federal internships that can span several semesters and may lead to full-time NASA employment after graduation, with an Individual Development Plan covering assignments and training.
Who can apply
OSTEM applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 16, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled in a certificate or degree programme at an accredited U.S. institution. Recent graduates may apply for the three sessions after graduation. Pathways applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 16, enrolled or accepted at least half time at an accredited institution, hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 and be able to complete at least 480 hours before finishing their degree or certificate.
What you get
Most OSTEM interns receive a stipend based on academic level and session length, though some volunteer roles may appear in project descriptions. Typical hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Career areas include engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, information technology, programme management, finance, communications, procurement, safety and social sciences.
How to apply
OSTEM applicants use the STEM Gateway system, can apply to multiple projects across centres, and need no letters of recommendation. Pathways applicants apply through USAJOBS when positions open and should prepare a federal résumé. International students should note that both routes require U.S. citizenship.
Key dates
OSTEM application deadlines for 2027 are September 14, 2026 for spring, February 26, 2027 for summer and May 21, 2027 for fall. A Pathways spring 2027 start date is January 25, 2027.
