Overview

The Max Planck MPIIB Summer Internship is a three-month research program located in Berlin, Germany. The opportunity is designed for dedicated students facing social, cultural, financial, or personal constraints that adversely affect their academic ambitions. Participants work on research projects under the guidance of experienced scientists, gain practical research experience, and access a prominent scientific network. The program also features a complementary component offering classes on application training, developing research questions, and scientific presentations, alongside social events and visits to other scientific institutes in Berlin.

Who can apply

The program is open to international Bachelor and Master students who are currently enrolled at a university, which is required to obtain a visa. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four semesters of their Bachelor studies at the time of application, maintain a strong academic record, and possess a background in biology, medicine, biochemistry, epidemiology, or a related field. Candidates need a good command of the English language, must be available for the entire duration of the program, and must undertake the internship on a voluntary basis rather than for degree credit points. Preference is given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries. Candidates must also explain their motivation for applying to a specific project and provide valid reasons for the constraints they face during their education.

What you get

Selected participants receive a monthly stipend of €1,400 to cover living expenses in Berlin. Travel compensation is provided, and accommodation close to the Institute is given. Interns gain access to a top scientific institution and practical research experience.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae of no more than two pages, a motivational letter using the template provided on the website, and a reference letter from a professor or postdoctoral mentor. Additional required documents include transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate degrees, a Bachelor degree diploma if completed, a photograph, and any other relevant supporting materials.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the online application portal by entering personal, educational, and contact details, and uploading the required documents. Applicants must read and agree to the terms and conditions, review the information carefully, and submit the form. A confirmation email is sent upon successful submission.

Key dates

The internship runs for three months from 1 September to 30 November 2027. The last date to apply is 27 November 2026.
