Overview

The LPI Summer Internship is a ten-week program based in the United States that offers undergraduate students valuable research experience in planetary science. Participants work alongside world-class planetary scientists at the Lunar and Planetary Institute or the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The program runs from June 7 to August 13, 2027, and includes professional development activities such as scientific lectures, workshops, and opportunities to present research findings.

Who can apply

This merit-based opportunity is designed for undergraduate students who have completed 50 semester credit hours and are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program during the semester prior to the internship. Students studying physical sciences, natural sciences, engineering, computer science, and mathematics receive preference. Eligibility is open to all individuals regardless of gender, sex, or disability. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through standardized tests or a letter from an English department professor at their university.

What you get

Selected interns receive financial support of at least $13,639 for the duration of the ten-week program, which provides assistance toward travel, housing, and living expenses. The cost of housing is paid directly to the accommodation provider and deducted from the total financial support amount. In addition to financial backing, participants gain hands-on research experience, networking opportunities with professional experts, and career-oriented skill development.

Requirements

Candidates must submit an online application form containing responses to essay-style questions along with personal information. Required supporting documents include an updated resume or curriculum vitae, official academic transcripts in English, and two to three letters of recommendation. An official hard copy of the academic transcript must be emailed directly by the candidate's college registrar. Proof of English proficiency is also required if applicable.

How to apply

Applicants must complete the online registration form by filling out all required fields and answering all essay questions. After completing the form, candidates must submit their application online and will receive a confirmation email upon successful submission. Additionally, applicants must ensure that their college registrar emails an official hard copy of their transcript and that their referees submit the required recommendation letters.
