Overview

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, founded in 1889 as the world organization of national parliaments, offers a one-year full-time internship in its Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland. The Secretariat is based mainly at the House of Parliaments and includes teams covering member parliaments and external relations, technical cooperation, the resource centre, gender partnership, youth empowerment, international development, human rights, communications, support services and the Executive Office. The intern works under a manager for 37.5 hours a week, based at headquarters, though telecommuting may be possible depending on the service or division.

Duties include logistical preparation for activities and meetings, administrative backstopping for correspondence, maintaining spreadsheets and records, processing communications needing the Secretary General's signature, attending meetings with senior officials when required and preparing concise minutes focused on outcomes and follow-up actions. Interns also support IPU events and biannual assemblies, may research specific programmes, and can receive other suitable tasks.

Requirements

English and French are the IPU's two official languages, and the intern should communicate orally and in writing in both. Discretion and respect for confidentiality are required, along with comfort using spreadsheets, documents, correspondence systems and standard office tools. Initiative, flexibility, organization and the ability to work independently or in a team are valued.

What you get

Interns receive a monthly stipend of CHF 1,500. They arrange and pay for travel to and from Geneva, passports, visas, insurance, accommodation and living expenses, and appropriate insurance coverage is required.

How to apply

Applicants were asked to send a CV, a description of no more than 200 words explaining their suitability, their availability to start and their Swiss residence or work permit status, by email with Internship in the subject line.

Key dates

The deadline was 23:59 CET on September 3, 2026.
