Engine Programmer Intern
Overview
Epic Games, maker of Unreal Engine and Fortnite, is offering an Engine Programmer internship in London, working on a new serialization stack for Unreal Engine. This schema-based system will sit at the heart of how engine content is saved, loaded and versioned. Interns are given a feature to own during the development cycle, such as schema evolution, data migration and recovery, type bindings or debug tooling, and work with their engineering lead and partner teams across the engine. The start date in 2027 is flexible, and recruitment continues until teams find a good match.
What you will do
The intern designs and implements a feature within the serialization stack, taking it from proposal to shipped code with guidance. The work includes writing high-performance, memory-efficient C++ for systems where correctness and backwards compatibility are critical, building tools for working with serialized data such as diffing, visualization and human-readable text formats, and writing thorough unit tests that protect data integrity across save, load and version-upgrade paths. The intern also collaborates with partner teams on integration and takes part in code reviews and design discussions.
Requirements
Epic looks for strong C++ fundamentals, including memory management, pointers and the basics of templates, a good understanding of data structures and memory layout, and an interest in low-level systems programming such as file formats, binary data, compilers or engine internals. A rigorous, detail-oriented approach, comfort debugging unfamiliar code and tracking down root causes methodically, the ability to explain technical designs and ask good questions, and openness to feedback are also wanted. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the posting location for the duration of the internship.
