Overview

Human Rights Watch is seeking two students to join its Development and Outreach Department for an internship based in the Sydney office. The organization focuses on protecting human rights globally, advocating for accountability, and working to end human rights abuses. This role offers tertiary students exposure to the operations of an international non-profit organization through hands-on tasks and participation in daily office activities.

Who can apply

Applicants must be currently enrolled students for the entire duration of the internship term and must be based within commuting distance of the Sydney office. Candidates are required to have valid work authorization in Australia for the full length of the internship. Human Rights Watch welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds and is an equal opportunity employer.

What you get

Selected interns will work up to 20 hours per week for a three-month period spanning from mid-February 2027 through the end of April 2027, with potential for extension and schedule flexibility regarding the start date. Interns in Australia receive lunch reimbursements of up to $20 per day and transportation reimbursements of up to $15 per day when working from the office. Participants may also have opportunities to arrange academic credit through their educational institutions, attend lectures, join staff meetings, and network with other interns, volunteers, and employees.

Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational skills, reliability, a proactive approach to projects, and a strong interest in international human rights. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, are strongly preferred. Desirable qualifications include prior experience in fundraising, media, social media, government relations, event planning, and Salesforce. Interns are expected to work from the Sydney office at least two days per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

How to apply

Interested candidates must submit a complete application consisting of a resume and a letter of interest through the designated online job portal. Only complete applications are reviewed, and due to the high volume of applicants, only shortlisted candidates will receive further contact.

Key dates

The application deadline is 20 November 2026. The internship runs from mid-February 2027 to the end of April 2027.
