Development & Outreach Department Intern
Overview
Human Rights Watch is looking for an intern for its Development and Outreach Department in the Berlin office. The internship lasts three months, is full-time at a maximum of 35 hours per week, and ideally runs from mid-January 2027 to mid-April 2027. It suits people who want development and fundraising experience in a large international non-profit organisation.
The intern gains skills in event planning, database management and donor relations, learns about the organisation's priority human rights issues, attends planning and department meetings and can use in-house trainings and briefings. The internship focuses on event planning ahead of the organisation's biggest fundraising event of the year, the 2027 Voices for Justice Dinner in Berlin on Friday, 12 March 2027.
What you will do
The intern assists the development team with event logistics and planning, drafts and edits documents and correspondence for donor relations, helps create and edit graphic design and event materials, and works with the team to maintain documents and database records. The intern also supports the coordination of donor communication and outreach for fundraising, and may take on further tasks matching personal interests. Opportunities include online lectures, professional development workshops, human rights events and networking with other interns, volunteers and staff.
Who can apply
Applicants must be enrolled students for the whole internship, preferably studying in Germany, and the internship must be a mandatory part of their studies, so they need to be eligible for and submit a certificate for a compulsory internship before starting. Valid work authorisation in Germany is required. The organisation seeks well-organised, self-motivated, reliable and detail-oriented people with a demonstrated commitment to human rights or international issues, interest in fundraising, outreach and special events, excellent written and spoken German and English, and computer skills such as Excel. Frequent attendance in the office and at events is required.
What you get
Interns based in Germany receive a gross monthly stipend of EUR 556. Students can often arrange academic credit.
How to apply
Applicants submit a CV, a cover letter in English and a short writing sample of about 300 words in German. Only complete applications are reviewed and only shortlisted candidates are contacted.
