CARE USA Internships and Fellowships 2026 – Apply for International Development Opportunities
Overview
CARE USA runs internships and fellowships for students and recent graduates who want practical experience in international development, global health and humanitarian assistance. Placements are project-driven and closely supervised, so participants contribute to real CARE initiatives while building workplace skills. Opportunities are posted periodically through the year.
Domestic internships take place at CARE USA headquarters in Atlanta or at field offices in the United States. An Overseas Interns Program places students in CARE country offices, mainly for short-term learning assignments meant to prepare future leaders in development and humanitarian work.
Who can apply
Domestic applicants must be at least 18 and enrolled in a relevant undergraduate programme (juniors and seniors preferred) or a graduate or post-graduate programme, or have graduated within the previous six months. Students on visas need work authorization through their institution, and those receiving financial support or academic credit should state which costs they can cover.
Overseas applicants need financial support from an academic institution or another agency, legal work authorization and the right visa for the host country, comprehensive medical cover including emergency evacuation insurance, and proficiency in the language the assignment requires. They must be in a relevant graduate or post-graduate programme or have graduated within the previous six months. Helpful qualities include two years of professional experience, analytical and organisational strength, intercultural communication skills, and a second language such as French, Spanish or Portuguese.
What you get
Interns receive orientations and training on CARE's history and programmes, networking opportunities and coaching. Overseas participants learn through on-the-job assignments, coaching and formal training, including courses at CARE Academy, the organisation's online university. Assignments are matched to academic background and interests on a rolling basis. Most overseas placements run from June to August, though some happen at other times and can be longer. CARE only places interns in low- or moderate-risk locations, asks sponsored students for a university letter permitting travel, and requires an online safety and security course plus a security briefing on arrival.
How to apply
Applications need a current resume or CV listing at least three references, and a cover letter explaining the applicant's programmatic and research interests.
