ALD Lab - Working Student
Overview
Black Semiconductor GmbH offers a part-time working student position as an ALD Lab Working Student based in Aachen, Germany. This hands-on role involves supporting the daily operations of the Atomic Layer Deposition tool and relevant metrology equipment within the FabONE cleanroom. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with experienced ALD process engineers to contribute to ongoing research and development activities.
Who can apply
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a bachelor or master degree program in materials science, physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field, preferably in their final year. Applicants need a basic understanding of thin-film characterization methods like ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, or atomic force microscopy. Additional qualifications include strong attention to detail, an interest in semiconductor processing, a willingness to learn cleanroom protocols, basic proficiency in data logging and visualization using Excel or Python, good English communication skills, and the ability to work reliably in a laboratory team.
What you get
The position provides practical training in cleanroom safety, sample preparation, and metrology equipment alongside hands-on experience with atomic layer deposition processes and semiconductor laboratory operations. Working students gain direct exposure to spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and atomic force microscopy while collaborating with senior process engineers. The organization also offers a benefits package that includes insurance, pension, and virtual stock options.
Requirements
Working students are responsible for preparing samples for atomic layer deposition and characterization runs, performing routine thin-film measurements, and assisting senior process engineers with tool test runs and operational parameters. Duties also include handling delicate samples and cleanroom equipment safely, documenting characterization results, uploading structured metrology data to central repositories, organizing measurement data, and helping establish and maintain a chemical and precursor inventory system.
