Overview

The ACMER Foundation Leadership Development Program Summer 2027 Internship places participants in congressional offices in Washington, D.C., to gain direct exposure to the U.S. policymaking process, legislative work, and public policy development. Hosted by the American Committee for Middle East Rights Foundation, this initiative is designed to build a long-term pipeline of leaders committed to public service, foreign affairs, human rights advocacy, and Middle East and North Africa issues. Participants engage in practical legislative tasks while benefiting from mentorship, leadership training, and professional networking opportunities.

Who can apply

Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are undergraduate students or early-career professionals pursuing or holding degrees in international affairs, political science, law, public policy, or related disciplines. Candidates are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and should demonstrate an interest in foreign policy, human rights, national security, legislative affairs, and Middle East and North Africa-related issues. While applicants from all backgrounds are welcome, preference may be given to individuals living within participating congressional districts or attending educational institutions located within them. The program also strongly encourages applications from individuals of Middle Eastern and North African descent, as well as those with a demonstrated commitment to Middle East and North Africa-related issues and human rights advancement.

What you get

Participants receive a $5,000 stipend provided directly by the ACMER Foundation, with potential need-based financial assistance also available for selected individuals to help reduce financial barriers. In addition to financial support, interns gain hands-on congressional office experience, structured mentorship, leadership development training, and career preparation for Capitol Hill and public service roles. Networking activities allow interns to connect with congressional staff, policymakers, public service professionals, advocacy leaders, foreign policy experts, and fellow emerging leaders.

Requirements

Participants must reside in Washington, D.C., for the entire duration of the program, spanning from May to August 2027, and virtual participation is not an option. Interns are personally responsible for securing and covering their own housing costs, as housing is not included in the stipend. Selected individuals are expected to participate on a full-time basis throughout the summer.

Key dates

The internship takes place during the program period from May to August 2027, with exact start and end dates remaining flexible.
