Overview

The United Nations Development Programme runs the Ocean Innovation Challenge, offering its fifth call for proposals to fund practical innovations addressing marine pollution, coastal and marine ecosystem degradation, and sustainable ocean resource use. Funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the initiative supports solutions that move past the conceptual stage to deliver measurable environmental, social, and economic benefits. Selected participants enter an implementation and incubation programme lasting up to 17 months.

Who can apply

Legally registered private-sector organisations from around the world can submit proposals, including start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, social enterprises, and private businesses. While applicants may be based globally, the proposed project must be implemented in at least one of five beneficiary countries consisting of Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, or Viet Nam, and must have the acceptance of relevant government authorities. Local partnerships are strongly encouraged, and the initiative specifically seeks solutions benefiting women, young people, and people experiencing poverty, giving preference to innovations that are women-led, women-owned, youth-led, or youth-owned.

What you get

Selected innovators receive financial support of up to US$100,000. Additionally, participants are provided with technical mentoring, project management assistance, monitoring and reporting support, fundraising guidance, and access to networks of investors and development partners.

Requirements

Applicants must propose implementation-ready innovations that fit into one of three thematic areas: marine pollution reduction, coastal and marine ecosystem restoration, and sustainable blue economy development. Eligible projects must demonstrate a credible pathway towards wider adoption and show how results can be measured through specific indicators relevant to the project. Implementation in the designated beneficiary countries requires the formal acceptance of the relevant government authorities.

Key dates

The application deadline is November 15, 2026, at 23:59 New York time.
